Overview

Tanzania is a vast land of contrasts ranging from enriching cultures, diverse landscapes and teeming species of wildlife to historical sites and bustling towns. Experience the wide-open plains of Africa in the Serengeti and discover the eco-system of this African Eden. Marvel at the annual migration of more than one million wildebeest and zebra as they stream across the Serengeti plains - an unbelievable sight.

In May 2018 Live the Journey will once again treat our guests to a life-changing journey to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to view the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras. Our tour will also include Lake Manyara National Park and the breath-taking Ngorongoro Crater.

For 2018 we will offer two departures, based on the same routing:

  • Luxury Safari from 18 to 26 May 2018 (Maximum of 6 guests, luxury 5-star accommodation)
  • Classic Safari from 20 to 28 May 2018 (Maximum 12 guests, classic 4-star accommodation)

Itinerary

Day 1: Johannesburg - Arusha

Your tour leader will meet you at the check-in counter at O.R. Tambo International Airport for check-in procedures. Depart from O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg to Nairobi, Kenya. Arrive in Nairobi and connect with the flight to Kilimanjaro Airport in Arusha, Tanzania. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel located a 45-minute drive from the airport, near Arusha town centre.

Day 2: Arusha - Lake Manyara

After breakfast, you depart Arusha passing through the Masai Steppe filled with many picturesque African villages as well as maize, coffee and banana plantations.

At the town of Makuyuni you turn north-west and continue the journey up through a scenic escarpment that brings you to your lodge, perched on the edge of the Rift Valley with stunning views over the distant Lake Manyara. You arrive in time for lunch. After lunch there is a game drive in Manyara National Park.

Day 3: Lake Manyara - Serengeti

After breakfast, leaving Lake Manyara behind, the journey continues north-west across the stunning hilly countryside of the highlands which is filled with wheat and coffee plantations, and then into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From here lie the vast plains of the Serengeti, where you’ll hopefully start spotting game well before you get into the park. Arrive at your lodge for lunch. After lunch you enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park.

Day 6: Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you depart for Ngorongoro, viewing game across the vast Serengeti plains, stopping off en route for your picnic lunch. You then continue your journey towards Ngorongoro where you visit a Masai Village before you continue to your lodge, set high on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater

A highlight awaits you this morning as you depart to explore the Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast, you descend with a picnic lunch through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It’s an awesome wildlife experience. Lunch is served near a small lake filled with hippos. You then continue game viewing before returning to the crater’s rim and your lodge.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha

Departing Ngorongoro Crater after breakfast, head south east past Lake Manyara and Mto wa Mbu village. Through the highlands and the Karatu district, you’ll view the scenic wheat plains and coffee plantations here before journeying down the spectacular escarpment where you turn north on to the main Arusha – Dodoma road and head into Arusha. On arrival in Arusha you will be provided lunch followed by an afternoon Coffee Tour. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel this evening.

Day 9: Departure

After an early/ packed breakfast, you are transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport where you will check in for your flight to Johannesburg, via Nairobi.
