Escape the ordinary on an enchanting journey into the exquisite French countryside. Hosted by Louis Jansen van Vuuren, Hardy Olivier, and DeVerra Auret, spend six nights at the renowned Chateau de la Creuzette in the Limousin Region of France.

La Creuzette becomes your luxury base as you spend your days visiting castles, gardens, markets and enchanting villages in La France profonde – the authentic “deep” France – where time seemingly stood still. In the evenings gather around beautifully set tables and feast on the abundance of good food, wine, and friendship.

Itinerary

DAY 0: JOHANNESBURG/ CAPE TOWN - PARIS

Evening departure from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Paris.

DAY 1: PARIS – LA CREUZETTE

Welcome to France! Early morning arrival where you are met at Charles de Gaulle airport and transferred by road to Chateau de la Creuzette, your holiday residence in Boussac village.

We stop for a gourmet lunch at the world-renowned truck stop L’Escale village (which boasts, amongst other features, no fewer than nine full-time pastry chefs). From here we continue to Boussac, arriving at your holiday destination in time for tea, coffee and mignardises (typically French confectionaries). Take time to settle in, relax and explore the estate.

We meet in the dining room of the summer kitchen at 19h30 for a glass of champagne followed by a welcome dinner.

DAY 2: LA CREUZETTE

Breakfast will be served at 09:00 in the main dining room.

Our excursions today will introduce you to the world of tapestry and take us to the Ateliers de la Marche in Aubusson and Felletin. We first explore the picturesque village of Aubusson where French tapestries and carpets have been woven and restored for centuries. The new Cité de la Tapisserie with superb collections of ancient and contemporary tapestries will be our first experience.

Lunch will be enjoyed at one of the restaurants on the banks of the river Creuse, and later we also visit a master weaver’s studio, the cartoon (tapestry pattern) museum, and a restorer of antique masterpieces. The Neolice studios in Felletin, with their advanced technology, will demonstrate how they are able to create fine tapestries mechanically for the many contemporary artists and designers whom they count among their clientele.

We head back to La Creuzette where we meet in the kitchen for a hands-on cooking session from our cookbook, The Story of a House. Dinner follows with a selection of wines from the Centre of France being offered for tasting.

DAY 3: LA CREUZETTE

Our excursion today takes us to the charming village of Charroux, where an artisanal mustard maker demonstrates their skill using an ancient stone press. We visit a soap maker who has turned a medieval tower into his studio and also a saffron producer.

We continue our excursion to Vichy (the renown spa town), where we enjoy lunch at a restaurant on the banks of the river. In the afternoon, we walk through the old town where charming shops and boutiques line the central square. We will be sure to stop at the source of the healing waters of the Celestine fountain before returning to La Creuzette.

Back at La Creuzette our guest chef Jean- Jacques Tulleau, and his wife and wine-connoisseur, Françoise Tulleau will be ready for tonight’s tasting and cookery demonstration, which will incorporate selected ingredients from today’s excursions. Dinner follows with a selection of wines from the Burgundy region to be enjoyed.

DAY 4: LA CREUZETTE

Today is all about creative exploration in the art studio, for those who wish to paint with Louis Jansen van Vuuren. Or you may choose to enjoy a day at the races for those guests who would prefer to race around the private track of retired French Formula III champion, Pierre Petit.

Lunch for the artists will be served at La Creuzette, whilst a picnic will be in store for the guests who choose the adrenalin rush option at the Circuit de Mornay.

We return to La Creuzette where you will have some relaxing time before we meet for cocktails and dinner.

DAY 5: LA CREUZETTE

Today is market day in Boussac. After breakfast, we wander among the colourful market stalls which are laden with fresh fruit and vegetables, fragrant soap from Marseilles, and other artisanal products from the region. Here we find inspiration for our lunch menu.

Using the fresh ingredients selected at the market, lunch will be prepared and enjoyed at the long stone table in front of the La Creuzette summer kitchen.

After lunch, we take a short walk to the 11th century Château de Boussac. This gothic castle (privately owned) is filled with an incredible collection of antiques and beautiful tapestries. We may have an opportunity to see the owners’ private apartments, which are not usually open to the general public. We explore the rest of the village and its interesting history, after which we head back to La Creuzette. You will have some time to pack before we meet for drinks, followed by our farewell dinner.

DAY 6: LA CREUZETTE – PARIS - DEPARTURE

After a leisurely breakfast, we take a short drive to the Priory garden at Notre Dame d’Orsan (this was the inspiration for the garden design at Babylonstoren in Franschhoek). We spend the morning in this magical garden.

From here we depart for Chateauroux and take the fast train to Paris Station arriving late afternoon, in time for our evening departure.
