Iceland

Land of fire and ice

DATE: 24 August – 01 September 2012 (spring tour)

GROUP: minimum 6, maximum 12

A must do tour for your bucket list

“Die avontuur is te gou verby. Ons het vir ‘n week deur ‘n land van vuur en ys gery waar die aarde sy warm asem uitblaas, maar ook sy skoonheid in oorvloed wys. Dit is tienvoudig mooier as wat ek verwag het.” Dolf Els!
“This tour is just a cut above the rest and a brilliant experience - I will be back” – Dirk de Jongh!

Introduction:

Iceland is in all senses surprising with an educational level of 99% and the highest per capita readers in the world. The infrastructure is good; the food of the highest order and the beauty and variety makes for unforgettable images in your mind. Life underneath the surface of the earth, however, is the thing that will mesmerize you the most. Imagine, hot water of 100 degrees ejecting 40 meters into the air every 10 minutes, steam bubbling out of the earth, a drive through a 32 km crater … the world’s longest, or standing on the edge of the volcano responsible for the ash cloud over Europe in 2010, or driving on a glacier with an 800 m thick ice layer beneath you. It is impossible to leave Iceland untouched. There are two ways of exploring Iceland – driving the highways or driving the back roads. In true Live the Journey spirit, we will be taking the back roads to ensure the best possible experience, still including the highlights and sleeping in great accommodation. We have compiled the programme in such a way as to allow enough free time to explore Reykjavik at your own pace and time, before departing to the more remote parts. There are great shops, beautiful little streets, top restaurants and lots of history. Then an adventure of a lifetime begins when we drive our converted 4 x 4 vehicles on mountain trails that are not accessible to everyone. You drive your own converted vehicle with big wheels, 38 to 44 inches. Arctic Trucks in Iceland has converted and adapted Hilux, Cruisers and Patrols to make them more suitable for their local driving conditions … these conditions being glaciers and ice. To make it more rewarding we will follow an off-the-beaten track through spectacular Iceland scenery. We will see sprouting geysers, beautiful waterfalls, volcanoes, drive on a black sand beach, see the world’s largest volcanic canyon and bath in hot springs. Don’t miss out on this expedition!
